ANEESA LEE AND THE WEAVER'S GIFT
Nikki Grimes’ 13 interrelated
poems introduce us to the young weaver Aneesa Lee who she herself is woven
of black and white and Japanese, “a blend that sometimes led to teasing.”
Aneesa learns through her weaving; "a herringbone of sadness, threads
of anger and gladness", she can link the past and present people
“in a community of cloth.” The emotionally expressive poetry enhanced
with Ashley Bryan’s vivid tempera and gouache paintings is a beautiful
metaphor.
