Jane Yolen wrote:

"I wrote Owl Moon because my husband used to take our children owling when they were younger. My husband is the original of Pa. The little girl in Owl Moon is not me but is based on my daughter Heidi, who is now an adult with her own little girl, Maddison Jane. We are looking forward to the time that Maddison is old enough to be taken out owling.

Though I set the book in the little woods near our house, the illustrator, John Schoenherr, used his own farm in New Jersey as the setting for his beautiful pictures."

Nocturne - Picture Book
