"'Crickwing' never set out to
be a bully--all he wanted was to create his art in peace. But it's not
easy being different. A cockroach with a cricked wing and a flair for sculpture
is a ready target for the bigger creatures in the forest."
Janell Cannon, author of "Stellaluna" again captures truth through fantasy in this beautifully illustrated adventure which is perfect for dialogue on bullies, cooperation, anger, being yourself and art. MORE OF JANELL CANNON |

In
1998, Jack Gantos introduced us to "Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key" in which
hyperactive Joey has trouble paying attention or controlling his mood swings
when his prescription meds wear off and he starts feeling wired. "I’m a
good kid! I just got dud meds!" When Joey gets worked up, all his good
intentions and all the rules set by his mother and teachers go right out
the window.
In 2000, Jack Gantos brings us
"Joey Pigza Loses Control" where Joey meets his dad for the first time
in a very long time. Joey's mother was right. His father IS a grown-up
version of Joey. His father has just gotten himself together (or so he
thinks) and feels that Joey can do the same and convinces him to stop taking
his "meds."
Reading the "Joey Pigza" stories
is a powerful and moving experience. I highly recommend beginning with
"Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key," with an immediate dose of "Joey Pigza Loses
Control."

In 1851, a very feisty and free thinker by the name of Amelia Bloomer from Seneca Falls, New York found MANY things silly! She thought proper ladies were silly and she thought it was silly that proper ladies were not allowed to work...or vote! Even sillier than that, Amelia could not understand what was SO proper about wearing those long, heavy, tight corset pulled dresses that made women look like walking broomsticks. READ MORE. |
